RFP Title
Odor Control
RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a Top Global Personal Hygiene Company, invites proposals for technologies to reduce or neutralize odors caused by menses and/or blood in disposable personal care products.

Background

Each year, millions of consumers trust our client’s hygiene products to keep them clean and fresh. An important part of this market is the consumer perception of neutral or pleasant fragrances. While many regional groups have attempted to solve the odor control issue, most of the solutions have been limited in their scope. Our client is seeking a solution providing greater consumer satisfaction than the current approaches:

  • Odor masking fragrances (e.g. perfumes)
  • Odor neutralization (e.g. citric acid)
  • Odor adsorption (e.g. activated carbon)
  • Specific odor scavenger (e.g. lactic acid for N group)

Odor control for feminine care products is particularly complex as solutions must address the full odor profile of menses, while being safe for prolonged contact with sensitive skin, and also address consumer demands for natural products. At the same time, solutions must be cost effective for daily use in disposable products and provide significant odor reduction to give peace of mind to the consumer.

Key Success Criteria

The successful technology will:

  • Reduce odor perception by at least 50%
    • Prefer >80% odor reduction
    • Goal is for a product with a “Zero Odor” label
  • Be effective against all odors associated with menses and/or blood
  • Be safe for prolonged contact with human skin
    • Known skin irritants will not be considered
  • Preferably use natural ingredients

Possible Approaches

Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to:

  • New formulations addressing ketones and aldehydes associated with menses and/or blood odors
  • Innovations on absorbent core (e.g. odor control treatment on fluff pulp)
  • Identify solutions for odor-releasing micro-biome
  • Adaptation of an existing solution for efficient application in a feminine care product
  • Research into menses odor profile

Approaches not of interest

The following approaches are not of interest:

  • Known skin irritants

Preferred Collaboration types
  • Contract Research
  • Technology Licensing
  • Technology Acquisition
  • Supply Agreement
  • To Be Negotiated
Items to be submitted

Your response should address the following:

  • Non-confidential description of proposed technology and working principle
  • Availability of technical data including experimental results showing odor reduction
  • Technical maturity of the approach (concept, reduced to practice, prototype, ready to commercialize, ready to implement, commercialized)
  • Pathway to commercial scale including timing, estimated budget, and capacity for manufacture
  • Estimated costs of technology for efficacy under different conditions
  • Position on intellectual property including patent references
  • Desired relationship with sponsor
  • Brief team description and related experience

Appropriate responses to this Request

Responses from companies (small to large), consultants, venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, or inventors are welcome.  For example:

  • You represent a company or university that has demonstrated a proof of concept.
  • You represent a company or university that has reduced method to practice at lab scale.
  • You represent a company or university that has developed a method for use at pilot scale.
  • You represent a company or university that has demonstrated a method ready for implementation at industrial scale.
  • You represent a university research department that has a bench-scale demonstration ready to adapt.
  • You represent a university research department that has an undeveloped pathway with a high probability of success.
