RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a manufacturer of air freshener products, invites proposals for a volatile solvent suitable for use in vaporizing an active ingredient into the atmosphere. The solvent must be non-hazardous so that safety hazard warnings are not required.


Our client manufactures diffusers for a consumer to use in a home environment. The products operate by heating and vaporizing a solvent that contains an active ingredient, so that the ingredient diffuses at a slow rate into the atmosphere.


The solvent currently used is an isoparaffin, which performs well for the application. However, due to a change in CLP regulations, the solvent was re-classified as an Aspiration toxicant: Category 1. Consequently, it was necessary to change the product packaging for the products that contained the solvent, so that it featured a H304 hazard statement (“May be fatal if swallowed or enters airways”), a signal word (“Danger”) and a health hazard pictogram.


The presence of the health warning and pictogram on the packaging and documentation leads to safety concerns for potential purchasers and users of the product and acts as a deterrent to purchase. Our client therefore seeks an alternative solvent that will work as effectively as the isoparaffin currently used, but does not require either a health warning or pictogram to be displayed.


The client is seeking a solution provider that can provide not just a suitable alternative solvent, but also applications support in the form of samples for testing and the ability to answer technical questions related to the client’s application.


Anticipated Project Phases

Phase 1 – Testing of samples from shortlisted supplier(s)
Phase 2 – Supply agreement for the selected solvent to be used in production units


Criteria for moving from Phase 1 to Phase 2

The client will evaluate the proposed solvent (using the sample provided) for compatibility with the active ingredients and performance in the diffuser


Key Success Criteria

The successful technology will:

  • Meet the following specification
    • Vapor pressure: 1 Pa at 25°C
    • Flash point: Above 100°C
    • Purity: > 98%
    • No interaction with either Polypropylene (PP) or Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)
    • Stability suitable for a shelf life of 48 months
  • No danger classification documented in the MSDS
  • Have complete safety documentation
  • No odor at room temperature or when the solvent is heated
  • Compatible with active ingredient used in the diffuser, which is a fatty acid ester from 7 to 18 carbons
  • The solution provider should be able to provide a sample of the proposed solvent that our client can use for testing with the active ingredient in their diffuser
  • Prior experience of air fresheners or related applications is desirable

Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to:

  • Non-toxic alkanes
  • Synthetic hydrocarbons
  • Bio-sourced materials
  • Blends of harmless ingredients


Approaches not of interest

The following approaches are not of interest:

  • Solutions which are not commercially available
  • Solvents in the ester family (these are known to be incompatible with the active ingredient)
  • Solvents such as those in the diester family, polyols, ionic liquids and terpenes that are known to be incompatible with the plastics used
  • Diethylene glycol (as the odor is considered objectionable by consumers)
