RFP Title
Novel Clean Label Antioxidant Systems
RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a global consumer product company, invites proposals for novel antioxidant systems that can protect against oxidation in lipid/protein systems (up to 30% fat) at atmospheric environment.

Background

Sustainability and safety are of primary importance in current and future consumer-product goods. The industry strives to provide safe and effective antioxidant solutions from sources consumers would recognize when reading the ingredient line of their products.

NineSigma’s client manufactures consumer products that rely on the synthetic ingredients for shelf-life extension. The RFP sponsor seeks safe and reliable ingredient and formulation alternatives that prevent lipid and protein oxidation to the same level of efficacy as synthetic ingredients (i.e. BHA, BHT, Citric Acid, Propyl Gallate, etc.) while being recognizable to consumers on the product’s ingredient line.

Key Success Criteria

The successful technology will:

  • Provide protection against oxidation by at least one of the following:
    • Function as chelators of pro-oxidants such as metals (Fe, Cu, etc.)
    • Free radical scavenging/sequestration/chain breaking
    • Reduction potential to regenerate antioxidants/oxidized compounds
    • Mass transfer or stearic hindrance
    • Enzyme systems that breakdown pro-oxidant compounds
    • Other biologically approaches that can be a multi-component
  • Work individually or in tandem
  • Be a solution that adds consumer recognizable names to the product ingredient line or has no impact on the ingredient line
  • Be competitive, in terms of extending shelf-life, with current and typical synthetic ingredient preservatives such as BHA, BHT, Citric Acid, and Propyl Gallate.
  • Have data to show sustainability of such results in ingredient economics (raw material availability and sustainability, etc.) of the proposed approach.
  • Provide documented evidence of significantly increased levels of oxidative stability for lipid and lipid/protein systems.
  • Have line of sight to cost competitiveness to other consumer friendly antioxidants with effectiveness of synthetic antioxidants
  • Will work alone or in combination with other commercially available consumer friendly antioxidant systems

Possible Approaches

Possible approaches include ingredients, natural agents, and other physical or chemical processes with known antioxidant characteristics and/or mechanisms and no adverse effects to consumer recognition of ingredients in their product. Industries with possible solutions may include, but not be limited to, medical, pharma, chemical, food/beverage, nutrition, aerospace, military, and oil/gas.

Items to be submitted

Your response should address the following:

  • Provide a clear and concise description of the proposed system and current application
  • Availability of samples and prototypes
  • Please include any available performance data for your proposed approach
  • General availability of the material: quantity, lead time, etc.
  • Cost projections
  • Developmental budget estimates
  • Position on IP ownership and the current IP status around the proposed technology (list relevant patents, if available)
  • Technical maturity of the approach (concept, prototype, ready to commercialize, commercialized)
  • Team description and related experience
  • Desired business relationship with RFP sponsor

Appropriate responses to this Request

Responses from companies (small to large), consultants, venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, or inventors are welcome.  For example:

  • You represent a company that has demonstrated a proof of concept for an applicable approach.
  • You have a technology which should provide a solution ready for testing and transfer to commercial use.
  • You have a technology approach which should provide a solution but that requires further research and development to ready it for transfer to commercial use.
  • You represent a university research department that has a bench-scale demonstration.
