RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a major global manufacturer, seeks a technology enabling appropriate image recognition of the outdoor scene under bad weather where raindrops, etc. fall on the camera cover


Image recognition is used for multiple purposes, such as outdoor surveillance, object detection in automobiles, and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) in drones. Nevertheless, it is not easy to ensure appropriate recognition because, under poor weather conditions, raindrops fall on and adhere to the camera lens or lens cover. In recent years, innovative technologies to develop materials for components as well as advanced algorithms associated with increased processing capability in semiconductor processors have emerged and provided solutions to the above problem. The client has thus issued this open request to widely seek potential solutions from around the world.



Key Success Criteria

Target camera and cover are as follows (Figure 1):

  • Camera: lens unit of 8 mm diameter, RGB small camera of approximately 35 mm height
  • Cover: around φ10 mm portion overlaying the lens is transparent and colorless. Other portions are colored so that the camera inside is not visible from the outside.
    • Material: resin, such as acryl
    • Size: φ130 mm, radius of curvature R=200,

6 mm in thickness, 35 mm in depth (inside dimension)

If proposals are of material or device to be applied on the cover should meet the following:

  • Should be durable for repeated outdoor use and yield an effect of preventing adhesion of raindrops or removing them
    • Highly transparent and no compromise to image/recognition performance
    • Highly weatherable under direct sunlight
    • Highly scratch-resistant when wiped with a cloth, in case of material to be applied on the outer surface
  • In case of a device proposal, small enough to be installed inside the cover and its operation should not be visible from the outside.

Possible Approaches

Anticipated approaches include:

  • Solutions for making a cover surface highly water repellent or super-hydrophilic to prevent raindrop adhesion on the cover.
    • Coating or a functional film to be applied on the surface during or after injection molding of the cover part
  • Small device to remove raindrops by applying energy, e.g., heat or vibration, to the window
  • Image restoration algorithm based on image deterioration modeling owing to raindrops

  • Unique advantages of the technology
  • Development stage (performance verified on lab level/ under development for practical use /already implemented in practical use)
  • Application examples and current performance
  • (In case of hydrophobic/hydrophilic treatment, please describe contact angle, scratch resistance (pencil hardness), and transparency (total light transmittance) etc.
  • Current challenges and items to check for the client


Anticipated Project Phases or Project Plan

The client will review submitted proposals and possibly ask clarifying questions before selecting the most suitable candidates for collaboration. The client will select the best candidate(s) through evaluations. During the selection process, the client may execute non-disclosure agreements (NDA) with selected respondent(s), seek further information disclosure, and discuss specific development targets or potential opportunities.


The client will execute necessary agreement(s) with the selected respondent(s) and move to the advanced development phase through proof of concept based on prototype and additional development. Specifics of any collaboration will be determined through consultation with the concerned parties.
