RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a multibillion-dollar global machinery manufacturer, is seeking development partners for small and light-weight power sources.

Background

This global machinery manufacturer, a client of NineSigma, has been developing a multi-purpose working machine using a high-output density generator. However, the client’s target specifications are very challenging and they have yet to find a technology that is expected to meet those specifications.

 

The client has therefore issued this open request to further accelerate its technology development for earlier marketing.

 

We welcome a wide range of power source proposals from chemical-to-electrical energy conversion systems such as lithium battery and fuel cell to mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion systems based on an electric generator with an engine. (We will also accept proposals for highly efficient electric standalone generator).

 

Key Success Criteria

Development goal of power source

  • Weight
    • For a system based on a power source type such as fuel cell or lithium battery: Up to 40 kg
      • The weight assumes that the system contains all components necessary to operate, including a fuel tank and cooling unit.
      • Fuel is not included.
    • For a system based on an electric generator with an engine: Up to 40 kg
      • The weight assumes that the system contains all auxiliary units necessary for mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion, including a cooling unit, alternator, and inverter.
      • Fuel for driving the engine is not included.
    • For an electric standalone generator: Up to 15 kg
      • The weight assumes that the system contains an electric generator, power conversion unit, and cooling unit.
      • No cable is included.
  • Electrical output: Can continuously output 25 kW(DC) for an hour or more
  • Durability: Can withstand operation of about 1,000 hours.
  • (For an electric standalone generator) Conversion efficiency: Approx. 70% (assuming approx. 40 kW mechanical input to the generator)

 

No requirement is provided for the battery type (such as lithium battery, hydrogen fuel cell, or air battery) or for the engine fuel type (such as gasoline, fuel oil, or gas).

 

The development goal is so challenging, therefore proposals of such technologies are welcomed that would achieve the required performance level based on 1-2 years of development efforts.

Anticipated Project Phases or Project Plan

Respondents should submit proposals using the attached Response Template. The client will review submitted proposals and possibly ask clarifying questions before selecting the most suitable candidates for collaboration. The client will select the best candidate(s) through evaluations. During the selection process, the client may execute non-disclosure agreements (NDA) with selected respondent(s), seek further information disclosure, and discuss specific development targets or potential opportunities.

The client will execute necessary agreement(s) with the selected respondent(s) and move to the project execution phase. Specifics of any collaboration will be determined through consultation with the concerned parties. The assumed period would be 1-2 years for commercialization.
