RFP Description

NineSigma, representing a multibillion-dollar leading electric appliance manufacturer, seeks a technology that inhibits calcium scale formation and requires little maintenance.


The leading electric appliance manufacturer, a client of NineSigma, develops and manufactures home or industry electric appliances that involve the use of water. One complication in such existing products is that calcium in water adheres as scale to the inner surface of piping or an appliance over time, leading to a compromise in the cosmetic appearance and performance of the appliance.


Currently, the scale is prevented by the use of a conventional calcium ion removal technology, such as ion exchange membranes. Such membrane technologies require recovery, replacement, and other maintenance processes, however, the ease or comfort of use of such products are compromised.

As like the client, a lot of companies and research institutions around the world have been engaged in research and development for a scale inhibition to resolve the common challenge. In order to deploy such an on-going effort to their product development, the client has issued this open request.


We widely welcome proposals not only for innovative technologies, but also for existing technologies employing a long-life filtration membrane, leading to a reduced maintenance frequency.


Key Success Criteria

Water to be processed

Water for home or industrial use in the following condition:

  • Calcium ion concentration: Up to 500 ppm
  • Temperature: 0 – 60°C
  • Usage: Approximately up to 20 L/day


Final targets of the anticipated technology

Anticipated is a technology that can prevent or inhibit calcium scale formation for a long time.

  • Maintenance: Should be able to operate continuously for several years without maintenance
  • Power consumption: 300 W or less; lower consumption is preferable
  • Other: Comprised of materials or technologies that do not have corrosive effects


The client aims at incorporating a potentially promising technology into their home or industry electric appliance with a water use. Proposals are widely welcomed, including those even for enabling technologies, e.g., just scale inhibition materials.

Anticipated approaches include the followings

  • Coating to inhibit scale adhesion
    • Lubricant coating
    • Fluororesin coating
  • Introduction of a scale inhibitor into water
    • Use of a chelating agent
  • Long-life and highly durable membrane
    • Ion exchange membrane
    • Reverse osmosis membrane
    • Electrodialysis
  • Water softening technology that work without membranes
    • Deionization technology using magnetic or electric field
  • Application of biological reaction
    • Inhibitory reaction to adhesion of calcium to the teeth and the bones

Other technologies are also welcomed.

Anticipated Project Phases or Project Plan

The client will review submitted proposals and possibly ask clarifying questions before selecting the most suitable candidate(s) for collaboration.


The client will select the best candidate(s) through evaluations. During the selection process, the client may execute non-disclosure agreement(s) (NDA) with selected respondent(s), seek further information disclosure, and discuss specific development targets or potential opportunities. The client will execute necessary agreement(s) with the selected respondent(s) and move to the project execution phase.


Specifics of any collaboration will be determined through consultation with the concerned parties.
