Permanent Marking of Hot Steel Product

The capability to permanently mark a hot, moving steel object at 1m intervals intervals without making any contact with the steel object. The marking will consist of alpha numeric characters with a character height of 8 mm.



The length of a single object is in the range of 600-1500 m and there is gap of at least 15 seconds between two objects. The inter-object variations in speed are in the range of 2-15 m/sec and intra-object speed variations are in the range of 3 - 4 m/sec. The surface temperature of the object is in the range of 550-650oC.


The object during its movement may have some deviations in the vertical plane and the height of these variations is expected to be within ± 15 mm on an average but may be higher in some parts along its length.


Key Success Criteria

Demonstration of the ability to achieve the above criteria consistently and reliably in an industrial environment. 


Possible Approaches

Any cost-effective non-contact technology that meets the requirement will be considered.

Study of subsequent applications of the marked material.
